Ilana Greenbough

This creature's description may contain spoilers. Click to revealIlana Greenbough was born far from Ustalav, in a Varisian caravan traveling the routes along Varisia's Lost Cost. This particular caravan had long integrated halflings into their traveling families, and their skills at artistry and on-the-road repair work came naturally to her as she grew older and learned the ways and complications of traveling folk.

Some time after reaching adulthood, tragedy struck when the caravan was ambushed by ogres—Ilana was the sole survivor. Eager to put distance between a land that now only brought back memories of sadness, she traveled east. It was chance that saw her eventually settle in Maiserene, a small town that charmed her with its mix of beautiful landscapes and stunning architecture.

Ilana is a vibrant halfling woman whose hairstyle changes often to match her daily whims. (Not quite as frequently as a gnome's would, but she's always trying out new things.) Traditional Varisian tattoos adorn her shoulders, arms, and back. She's rarely seen without her leather toolbelt and a backpack filled with painting supplies—as she's eager to point out, “You never know when inspiration might come knocking, or when that knocking might actually be something that needs a quick fix!” When the curse struck Castle Arudora, Ilana was a key element in planning how to destroy the Laroba Bridge with fire—Maiserene's desperate attempt to contain the horrors after it became apparent the village was doomed. Her solution, jury-rigged trebuchet-like devices meant to fling bottles of flammable liquid, proved to be so effective that the bridge's destruction was swift. Unfortunately, she didn't live long after that realization; one of the unleashed monsters snatched her up and dropped her into the very fires she'd helped to ignite.

Campaign Role

Once she returns to her bench in Maiserene's workshop, Ilana helps to ensure the site remains well-stocked for the PCs' use and opens the location up for characters to help produce materials so that they can Earn Income, repair items, or even craft their own items. At your discretion, she could even craft items for the PCs, giving them one other way to shop for items beyond the trading post.

Side Quest

Once the PCs unlock the castle grounds, Ilana approaches them with a concern of hers. She tells them about an amazing art gallery in the reception halls she would visit as often as possible, and once that area unlocks, she urges the PCs to check whether it and the pieces on display within survived, or if it's still being curated by someone (or something). More to the point, though, on the day before the curse struck, Ilana had been visiting the gallery to speak about potentially having one of her own paintings—a landscape of Castle Arudora—displayed in the gallery. She left her painting there with the gallery's curator, Ilves Mondain, and while she doesn't expect it to have survived all this time, if the PCs could look for it in the gallery, in Ilves' office, or anywhere else, she would be grateful.

If the PCs later report to her about what became of the painting, Ilana is utterly astounded. Her pride at how her artwork managed to fight against the power of the curse spills over and influences ambient ectoplasm, resulting in the spontaneous creation of an envisioning aeon stone. She's as surprised at this development as anyone and asks the PCs if they'd do her the honor of accepting it as a gift as thanks for returning with her painting. The telepathic images this aeon stone sends have the quality of a skilled impressionist painting—not enough to transmit fine details (such as writing), but much more aesthetic to look at than the typical childish sketches that most of these aeon stones produce.

Reward: Grant the PCs 40 XP for completing this side quest.
