Ausken Dast

This creature's description may contain spoilers. Click to revealAusken knew from a young age that he'd eventually become Maiserene's sheriff. After all, his father was the sheriff, and his grandfather filled that role before him. So confident was he about his destiny that Ausken decided to start early by becoming both a bully and a snitch among the other children of the village. When one bit of bullying resulted in one of his targets nearly drowning, though, his parents (and particularly his father) were shocked and ashamed that their son would resort to such poor behavior.

Ausken's father pulled some strings with the nobles and got his son accepted into the castle guard at a young age, hoping the structure and experience would help him learn respect and patience. The following few years proved to be just the thing for Ausken, who learned quickly that “my dad's the sheriff” carried no weight with those inside the castle walls. He came out of this tough-love apprenticeship a better man, yet when his father died suddenly from an accidental fall while attempting to repair a roof in the village, Maiserene wasn't initially welcoming of the new young sheriff. It took years, and the consequences of numerous poor choices, for Ausken to grow into the role and earn the trust and respect of the village... and then the curse came, and everything ended.

Ausken is in his early thirties, with a robust mustache, a hearty build, and a stern expression, yet that expression softens when he looks upon the town he spent the last several years of his life defending. When the curse fell, Ausken was the last villager to die, torn apart by monsters even as he fought to defend Maiserene's ruins.

Campaign Role

Once his soul is restored, Ausken helps the PCs to keep their weapons and armor ready against the increasing dangers they'll face in Bastardhall, and in time he can provide potent magical effects to both. Once he physically manifests, he often spends his time patrolling Maiserene and can serve to guide any remaining explorations of the haunted shore the PCs might have. He can guide them to areas that still need to be investigated and made safe from monstrous influence.

Side Quest

Soon after the PCs unlock the castle grounds, Ausken approaches to tell them of his time spent serving in the castle guard, likely when they're resting or maintaining their gear. He can sketch out the rough layout of the castle grounds for the PCs and suggests that of all the locations therein, the armory (area B7) might be the safest place to hole up and rest if the PCs can't make it back to Maiserene. His expression then grows introspective as he recalls the brief romance he had with another guard in training during that time. It's a relief to him that she left the castle years before the curse fell to seek her destiny as an adventurer in distant lands, but if the PCs can check to see if the romantic pledge they'd carved into wood in the castle's training yard (area B8) still exists, he'd appreciate the tiny favor. If they ask where the carving was, his brow furrows and, in frustration, he says he can't recall. If the PCs report back with the information, tears well in his eyes and he thanks them, not only for the report but for the flood of memories they restore to him as they do so. This gratitude causes the ambient ectoplasm nearby to crystallize into a runestone bearing a ready armor property rune. With a chuckle, he tells the PCs a somewhat embarrassing story about how his lover used just such a rune to quickly dress after a tryst, and in so doing managed to keep their affair secret from the guard captain (who frowned on fraternization). After this, he gives the runestone to the PCs, thanking them once more for the gift of memory they brought him.

Reward: Grant the PCs 40 XP for completing this side quest.
