Shirail Animender

This creature's description may contain spoilers. Click to revealShirail's parents impressed the importance of faith upon her from a young age, but they heavily tempered those lessons with an even greater focus on tolerance and acceptance. Her father, a priest of Shelyn, and her mother, a priestess of Pharasma, showed her the ways two very different beliefs could support each other and expand on the core tenets of each religion, so that when she came of age and became an adventurer, she had little difficulty finding a place among such an eclectic group.

Once she began adventuring, Shirail's presence and temperament helped to bolster her group's teamwork and morale. Things were going fine, at least, until a tragic expedition into a haunted swamp in Versex left only Shirail alive among her group. Unable to singlehandedly transport the bodies of her companions back home to be properly buried according to their cultures and beliefs, Shirail cremated the three in a pyre she built there in the swamp. She stayed until the pyre was cool, then gathered their ashes before fleeing back home.

Her excitement of the adventuring lifestyle waned after that, and when an opportunity arrived to serve as the caretaker and priestess for a new church of Pharasma, it was easy for her to choose to join the villagers of Maiserene. She was ready to stay put and really serve a community. Shirail appears as a beautiful elf woman whose expression always carries at least a hint of somber introspection, as if she carries unpleasant memories that are never far from her mind. When the curse struck the castle and the surrounding village, Shirail perished in the defense of the church, grimly standing against undead animated from the remains of her one-time flock until the forces of the curse overwhelmed her.

Campaign Role

Shirail's power over life and death has grown stronger now that she's experienced death herself, and her support can help to restore PCs who have perished. She can also perform spellcasting services for the PCs for the standard prices, and can eventually teach certain formulas for a few rituals to the PCs as well.

Side Quest

Shirail kept her companions' ashes with her for a time, but after she accepted a post at Maiserene and struck up a friendship with the castle's priestess of Pharasma, she secured permission to have her friends' ashes interred in urns in the castle crypt. On the night of the curse, as she defended her church, she was attacked and mortally wounded by distorted, ghostly mockeries of her adventuring companions' ghosts. As she lay dying, she watched the three ghosts mock and deride her before retreating upward to the old temple of Pharasma in the southwestern portion of Castle Arudora above. Shirail had heard rumors in the months leading up to the night of the curse that an Arudora had been at work restoring the temple—but not to the worship of Pharasma. That night confirmed her fears that the new patron of the castle temple was a sinister deity indeed. Once the PCs unlock the fallen temple, Shirail approaches them and relates this story, asking them, when they can, to explore the old temple and find out if the spirits of her three adventuring companions remain within—and if so, to put them finally to rest by defeating the ghosts and bringing their urns of ashes back here to be placed in places of honor in Maiserene's temple. Once the PCs do so and bring news to her, Shirail's gratitude triggers a crystallization of the ambient ectoplasm into a set of devoted vestments, which she encourages the PCs to claim to aid them on their continuing adventures. These vestments' themes and decor shift to match the faith of the PC who wears them.

Reward: Grant the PCs 40 XP for completing this side quest.
