Daehalyan Mahethara

This creature's description may contain spoilers. Click to revealFrom the moment Daehalyan and Kajasiel Mahethara were born, they were set at odds. Their mother, Queen Naebora, saw in her twin sons the opportunity to perform an experiment, one designed to determine which was best suited to rule: strength of arms or strength of mind. As a result, the princes of Lattiskar grew up in the same home, but under very different circumstances. Daehalyan was given lessons in art and magic, blessed with the finest tutors the ayindilar city had to offer. Meanwhile, Kajasiel was raised with blade and bola, schooled in all the dangers of the Darklands. Though the brothers share a physical resemblance that marks them unmistakably as kin, their individual demeanors reflect their upbringings. Whereas Daehalyan carries himself with an easy grace, all slender lines and finery, Kajasiel's harsher childhood is betrayed by his clearly defined muscles and hair cropped close to the skull.

Never did Queen Naebora think her sons would find a common cause. Nor did they, until the day they realized that her excesses put them, their fellow ayindilar elves, and all of Lattiskar at risk. Working together for the first time, the twin brothers entered Naebora's quarters and closed the doors behind them. When they emerged, the left behind their mother's corpse and carried with them Lattiskar's Caphorite Crown. Since then, the brothers have ruled Lattiskar in a shared sovereignty, alternating every 13 years between the king and his advisor. Between them, the brothers have governed Lattiskar wisely, and all agree the city has prospered, both culturally and militarily, under their rule.

Daehalyan and Kajasiel are generally respected, if not loved, by Lattiskar's populace, though questions remain over their ascension to the throne. No one knows what brought the brothers together in thought and deed, and even decades later no one can say for certain which of them struck the killing blow. To prevent either from enduring the shame of matricide alone, Daehalyan and Kajasiel have kept that secret to themselves, even if it means that both their reputations are tarnished by the crime. Of course, many believe Kajasiel's martial training means he's more likely to have been the killer, but most fear “the Soldier King” too much to ever say so aloud— his reputation as a stern enforcer was set when his personal troops secured the Shiv in the chaos following Queen Naebora's death. Meanwhile, the reforms instituted by Daehalyan, “the Singer King,” have filled Lattiskar's coffers, giving many citizens the only reason they need to downplay his role in his mother's death.

Campaign Role

As the Vaultlines campaign begins, the Murderer Kings are the unquestioned rulers of Lattiskar, with Daehalyan taking his seat on the throne the very day the PCs arrive at the city in chains. After witnessing their actions in Lattiskar Harbor, the brothers summon the PCs to a meeting at the Palace of Fangs, setting them on Nuzial's trail and saving them from their harsh sentences at the Shiv.

The PCs are unlikely to return to Lattiskar after leaving the city at the start of Chapter 2, but if they do (or if they contact the brothers via sending spells or other magic), both Daehalyan and Kajasiel could provide counsel or other aid to the PCs. Should the PCs return to Lattiskar after the end of the campaign, they find the brothers working together again, this time to help the city recover from the disastrous effects of the vaultlines that struck it and its outskirts.
