Irabel Of Eiseth

This creature's description may contain spoilers. Click to revealIrabel was born in Absalom just over 20 years ago, the youngest daughter of Lady Xansippe, the city's high priestess of Cheliax, and Lord Gulv, an influential Chelaxian diplomat who now serves as that nation's official ambassador to Absalom. Although she is a noble in high standing with one of the city's most influential houses, Irabel had a difficult upbringing, and she shows few signs of having been raised in luxury. Her father abandoned the family to serve Queen Abrogail in the capital city of Egorian when Irabel was only 2, and for reasons Irabel never fully understood, her mother always seemed to hold her in contempt, focusing what little affection she was willing to share upon Irabel's older sisters, Azoria and Seichya. On Irabel's 10th birthday, Lord Gulv and all of his daughters survived an assassination attempt by an Andoren radical who hurled an alchemical bomb at their passing carriage. Expecting further attacks and eager to protect their family line should tragedy strike true on a second attempt, Lord Gulv and Lady Xansippe committed Irabel to a convent of the devil queen Eiseth in Westcrown, where the Sisterhood of the Golden Erinyes could protect her against the brutal politics of Cheliax and its enemies. There she has remained for the last decade in complete isolation from her family.

As part of her religious instruction, Irabel studied and practiced to become an assassin—an ironic focus given the reasons for her being sent to the convent in the first place. Yet further irony saw this training bringing her once more into the circle of her father and her family, the Tevineg clan. Central to the lore of the family—and, to be fair, its longevity and success—was an infernal pact signed by all members that dictated they were never to openly attack or try to slay any other member of the Tevineg clan. Following a recent return to Absalom to assume the duties as Cheliax's formal ambassador to the city, Lord Gulv sought to further consolidate his power within his own family. He had always resented the fact that he had married into the family and that his wife, Xansippe, thus outranked him as the house's official Scion Lord. Ever the tactician, Lord Gulv devised a way around the pact they all had signed and used his contact with the Sisterhood (unbeknownst to Irabel) to put his plan into motion.

Without making much attempt to cover his involvement, Lord Gulv hired the Sisterhood to assassinate the wife of Felden Remarios, an old political rival in Egorian. Gulv knew that Remarios would strike back in revenge by reciprocally assassinating his own “beloved” wife, Xansippe. Gulv would then become the supreme noble of the Tevineg family, allowing him to consolidate his power and finally bring his older daughters and other lesser members of the house and their allies fully into his sphere of influence. Gulv was right to anticipate his rival would use the same order of assassins to gain revenge, but he didn't count on the strength of the Sisterhood's whisper network. Although the Sisterhood tried to keep Irabel from discovering her father's tawdry business, word did reach her about the killer the leaders of the Sisterhood dispatched to fulfill Felden's contract on Xansippe. Irabel fled the convent that night, tracked down and murdered her sister-assassin, then decided to return to Absalom for a reckoning with her family.

For there was one other element of Gulv's master plan that the almighty Chimera had not accounted for—as part of her training and dedication to Eiseth, Irabel swore herself as a daughter of the Erinyes Queen, renouncing all ties to the family of her birth and releasing her from the bonds of the Tevineg pact by the laws of Hell. Although she harbors deep resentment toward her entire family, she decided before she even reached Absalom that her father had to die. After establishing herself in the city for a few weeks, during which she tracked the movements of her birth sisters, mother, and father, she finally decided to begin her confrontations with her oldest sister, Seichya, with whom she had always felt the closest bond. After more than a decade apart, however, Seichya thought of Irabel more as a stranger than a beloved sibling, and after a few tense moments the elder sister ordered her devil guards to capture Irabel and throw her into the Brine prison, loyally reporting Irabel's unexpected appearance to her father. Fearing complication at a critical juncture of his plan to prepare for the Test of the Starstone, Lord Gulv instructed Seichya to include Irabel in a group of prisoners he planned to send down to Clan Orthux by way of the Fall's End crime lord Gewgaw, hoping to treat Irabel to a final lesson in humility for daring to act against the family's best interests (naturally, Lord Gulv's hypocrisy is lost on him).

Stripped of the ceremonial habit of her order prior to being handed over to the Clan Orthux hryngars, Irabel is clothed in hand-me-down rags salvaged from the corpse of a captive who previously died of exhaustion. At the wrists, neckline, and ankles, the outfit fails to cover the edges of an elaborate full-body tattoo consisting of devilish symbols and Diabolic script, the mark of a Sister of the Golden Erinyes who has completed her training. Irabel is self-conscious about explaining her tattoos to strangers.

Irabel is slim and lithe like a gymnast. Even her casual movements seem deliberate, and in most cases, she conducts herself with the quiet grace one might expect from a nun. She is, however, quick to anger and prone to derision and sarcasm when aggrieved.
