Remacera

Remaceras are mysterious fey who represent the natural cycle of transformative rebirth and metamorphosis. They believe that the cycle of reincarnation is the greatest expression of rebirth and revel in opportunities to send other creatures down this path. To a remacera, acts of violence are akin to scavengers and bacteria helping dead organisms decompose—and there may be some truth to this, as it isn't uncommon to find strange blossoms and fruits in their wake.

Remaceras take the form of enormous caterpillars with striking patterns and serene human faces. Their calm visages are shattered when they stretch their jaws unnaturally wide to reveal a mouthful of deadly, sharklike teeth, which vibrate at high frequencies to damage and disorient foes. The most ancient remaceras can grow as long as 13 feet and weigh thousands of pounds.

Despite their violent proclivities, remaceras savor the opportunity to have profound conversations with intelligent creatures. They seldom hold those who slay them in contempt, for they too receive renewal in death. Those who undergo a crisis of belief and turn nihilistic return as escorites.

Sidebar - Additional Lore Death And Discource

Those who converse with remaceras often find them surprisingly agreeable as they curiously inquire about others' perspectives, hoping to enlighten themselves rather than to sway the other party's beliefs. In most cases, remaceras view this pastime as a pleasant prelude to the violent rebirth to follow, and they consider especially interesting conversation partners appealing candidates to host budding remacera larvae. Occasionally, the conversation is so fascinating that neither the remacera nor their would-be opponent wishes to end the discussion in violence, and they become strange but amicable acquaintances. If such a companion subsequently slays the murderous fey in retaliation for a massacre elsewhere, they might be visited in the following days by an exceptionally friendly creature—the remacera reborn—that joins them in their travels as a familiar or animal companion.
