Sporgout

Countless myths warn about the dangers of stepping into a ring of mushrooms, but few extend this caution to the hidden threat that often lurks beneath them. Sporgouts are born when mushroom colonies aiding in the decay of a corpse consume vast amounts of primal energy, whether because the body was a being of primal magic (like a leshy or arboreal) or because it died in an area of strong fey influence. These colonies become so infused with magic that they attain their own sentience as a singular sporgout, lying in wait underground to ambush those who carelessly draw near. Though once believed to be undead, sporgouts are not reanimated corpses; while they absorb the nutrients and magic of their host body, they are wholly new creatures.

Sporgouts resemble unnatural humanoids with bodies like rotting logs or burned or petrified wood, covered in a colorful riot of strange fungi and lichens. They have no eyes or mouths, though they turn their heads as if mimicking beings who use such features to communicate. They have little interest in interacting with strangers and are often mistaken for solitary creatures, but like mundane mushrooms, sporgouts can and do communicate with each other across long distances through a mycorrhizal network.

Sidebar - Additional Lore Sporgout Territory

It’s unknown whether a sporgout’s abilities are influenced by the beings they consume, but their bodies do seem to be shaped by their surroundings. Sporgouts in the deserts of Arcadia resemble bleached saguaro skeletons, while their cousins in the forests of Songbai look like charred bamboo and those from tropical regions are covered in the shaggy hair or fronds of native palm trees. Sporgouts born on other planes have even more inscrutable origins and are sometimes hardly recognizable.
