PFS StandardGutaki

Gutakis are large aquatic cephalopods, whose malice for other creatures shines through their ice-blue eyes. Their bodies a deep reddish purple, gutakis have fearsome eyes, though even scarier are their seven writhing tentacles, each lined with innumerable barbed hooks. An adult gutaki’s body is approximately 10 feet long and weighs, on average, 500 pounds. Due to their size and coloring, gutakis live and hunt in the darker depths of Golarion’s oceans, where they can better conceal themselves from their prey. However, they’re known to rise to the surface when their habitats are disturbed or overfished. When they do so, these enormous cephalopods boldly climb up onto the decks of ships or empty docks to feast on anything that moves.

These creatures are no mere animals. Gutakis are smart enough to understand several languages and will sometimes even talk to those they’re about to devour. However, their speech patterns are unusual enough that any who hear them converse might mistake the sounds for a babbling that only resembles speech. Oceanographers who have studied gutakis know that they tend to mix together words from different languages, and their sentences have no regard for syntax or grammar. With some knowledge and concentration, one can understand the vile threats and declarations of hunger a gutaki spouts... if one isn’t already being eaten alive.

The gutakis’ intelligence, coloration, and disposition lead many to believe that they’re born of fiendish influence, possibly from a long-ago planar breach into Hell or the Outer Rifts. As such, some refer to gutakis as “devilfish,” while others just do everything they can to avoid these creatures.

Sidebar - Treasure and Rewards Devilfish Cuisine

Though gutakis have comparatively greater intelligence than an average animal, some heartless chefs pay top coin for gutaki tentacles to prepare and sell to their elite (and equally unscrupulous) clientele. The most popular way to prepare devilfish is to saute it in hot peppers and spices and then serve it over pasta or rice. The intent is to create a meal spicy enough to evoke the fiendish fires from which the gutaki received their nickname.
