Erinys

As mortals persevere against the predations and schemes of the denizens of the unholy planes—daemons, demons, devils, and the like—such fiends are driven to fury, and a desire for vengeance against mortals rises in their collective wills. Erinyes are those emotions made manifest. While not as ancient as some of their extraplanar counterparts, erinyes have existed for as long as mortals have fought back against fiends. An erinys's form mocks mortals' frailty: a humanoid shape with wings as black as pitch and eyes that glow with baleful fire. Fiendish vipers slither constantly across their skin and through their hair, and an erinys can form these snakes into a living whip or direct them to bite anyone who draws too near. Most erinyes wear deep black robes or armor.

Erinyes can be found wherever unholy fiends feel a strong desire for vengeance. Erinyes consider themselves mercenaries, working for whatever fiendish faction gives them the opportunity to vent their wrath on mortals. They can be found throughout the unholy planes and the Universe. Rarely, an erinys will make a deal with a mortal to perform acts of vengeance on that mortal's behalf, especially if those acts are particularly violent.

Sidebar - Additional Lore The Golden Erinyes

Dressed in gilded breastplates, an all-female group of erinyes calling themselves the Golden Company have been employed by the diabolic goddess Eiseth for millennia, avenging every slight inflicted upon her and her most favored worshippers. A Chelaxian order of warrior-nuns under the auspices of the Church of Asmodeus have named themselves the Sisters of the Golden Erinyes in honor of these fiends.
