Booted Tom

“Don’t kick that cat,” an elder might warn a young child, “lest you rouse ol’ Booted Tom.” While most believe the legend of Booted Tom to be just that, a few mortals have received the shock of their lives when they heard a voice whisper, “Pssst, hey you!” and witnessed a feline emerge from the shadows, walking upright and clad in immaculate leather boots.

A booted tom, sometimes referred to in children’s tales as a puss in boots, is a restless creature, a master manipulator who finds the maltreated and helps them out of all kinds of trouble, from arranged marriages to imprisonment by abusive caretakers. While the motives of these fey seem benevolent, as with many First World creatures, their methods vary wildly. Sometimes their aid is harmless, yet there’s also a tale of an impoverished woman who wished to marry her sweetheart, but her beloved’s aristocratic family forbade the match. Her booted tom saw to it that the entire snobby family suffered a series of fatal “accidents,” leaving only her beloved alive, free to marry her.

Though the name “booted tom” would imply that such creatures are all male tomcats, in fact, this feline fey can be any gender. Booted toms change form the way mortals change socks. The only thing that remains consistent about their appearance is their very fine, always supple, leather boots.

Change Shape [one-action] (concentrate, polymorph, occult) The booted tom changes into their humanoid, animal, or true form. A booted tom’s true form is that of a Tiny, upright, booted feline. In humanoid form, the booted tom is Medium size of any common ancestry, but they must be wearing their signature boots. The booted tom’s animal form is a house cat walking on four legs. In animal form, they can still cast ventriloquism, which gains the subtle trait. Their animal form is the only time they’re seen without their boots, which meld to their body.Hissed Secrets [two-actions] (auditory, occult) The booted tom directs their manipulative fury at any who oppose them. With a hiss, the booted tom throws their voice at a target and whispers the target’s darkest secrets directly into their ear. The target takes 10d8 mental damage (DC 26 basic Will save). The booted tom can’t use Hissed Secrets again for 1d4 rounds.

Sidebar - Additional Lore Feline Footwear

No one knows the nature of the connection between booted toms and their namesake footwear. Some believe the boots function as a token of power, part of a bargain with a Tane granting a First World cat sentience and magical abilities. Others argue the boots merely function as a symbol. What is known is that stealing or even scuffing their boots is a surefire way to make an unrelenting enemy.
