Jubjub Bird

A jubjub bird resembles a giant dodo with long, muscular legs and wings capable of brief, if awkward, flight. When attacked with magic, their brilliant plumage, normally purple, shifts randomly in hue and pattern with each spell that hits home.

Jubjub birds belong to the Tane, a group of powerful creatures brought into existence as living weapons by the Eldest. Jubjubs have the dubious reputation of being the least powerful and intelligent of the Tane, though they're still formidable enough that few who underestimate them live long enough to regret the mistake.

Though these birds are sometimes kept as guardians or mounts, the Eldest generally create them for a singular purpose: to be hunted. Just threatening enough to provide a sporting challenge for the high fey lords, once they've been brought down, they make a delicious prize. Their cooked meat is famously exquisite, especially fermented for a few months in mahogany or ivory jars. Mortals who participate in such hunts, however, should take care if they're offered a portion of the prize—certain fey enjoy adding unusual seasonings, including, but not limited to, sawdust, glue, and locusts.

Sidebar - Additional Lore Such Friends Are Seldom Known

The rare fey (and even rarer mortals) who manage to befriend a jubjub bird find them to be staunch and loyal allies. A jubjub will instantly recognize any friend it has met even once before, no matter how long it’s been or how much the person has changed in the intervening time. Once its loyalty has been won, it can’t be bought with food or any other sort of bribe.
