Choxani

Known by mortals as “picture people,” choxanis are reflections of natural mimicry and resemblance. They embody a chameleon’s camouflage, a cloud that resembles a dragon, and all the other ways the natural world reflects upon itself, coincidentally or intentionally. Choxanis see these natural parallels as proof that all reality, from the First World to the Universe and beyond, has a parallel, repeating structure and destiny. Though rarely concerned with the affairs of deities, considering them merely another manifestation of the underlying nature of reality, they honor this structure itself with religious fervor.

Choxanis are humanoid figures with tough, woody skin and shimmering dragonfly wings. They communicate primarily through hand gestures and the colorful markings that cover their bodies, which can change in an instant to form text or images. Their faces are smooth and featureless, and they’re unable to speak or eat—instead, they gain sustenance from the hues of other creatures, unfolding the markings off their bodies to siphon color from their prey. While not all choxanis are hostile, their diet makes most mortals wary—anyone can become a colorless gray husk after finding themselves a potential meal. Gnomes especially avoid choxanis, terrified of having their color drained.

While most choxanis are happy to converse peacefully, especially if interesting patterns or colors are given as a gift for them to consume, their mindsets can be difficult to fathom. Coincidental appearances capture their interest much more than important information or imminent danger, and whole communities of choxanis have been lost to natural disasters while noting that the oncoming tsunami or wildfire resembled the structure of a nearby leaf. Of course, in the First World, they know they’ll likely be reborn with their memories intact after their journey through the River of Souls, so perhaps they simply consider a beautiful observation to be worth the price of death.

Sidebar - Additional Lore Lost Omens, Doomed Patterns

While most choxanis disregard the workings of the divine, some historically had faith in the importance of prophecy, believing it to be the clearest proof of reality’s great pattern. With the death of Aroden issuing in the Age of Lost Omens, these groups have given in to despair and nihilism. Believing that it’s now their duty to ensure reality follows its due course, they seek to impose the patterns they read through force. These sects of choxani fanatics almost always find doom in those patterns, seeking to recreate it on a grander scale. They deliberately create disasters and tragedies, believing the future that matches their predictions is one of untold suffering that they have no choice but to bring about.
