Grit Flinger

These pink-and peach-furred fey resemble large bipedal meerkats. They often wear simple clothes and bands of gemstones wrapped with string and leather. These gems are elegantly cut in the shapes of lizards, scorpions, and desert blooms. Grit flingers possess an innate ability for controlling sand and carry a magical sack of endless sand they use to augment their talents. They tend to live in small communities with expansive tunnel networks deep below ground, typically beneath deserts and badlands.

These resilient fey are believed to guard deposits of precious materials, such as of gemstones, silver, and the purest of iron. The easiest way to anger a grit flinger is to dig near their homes. Upon discovering a hole or tunnel, they’ll use their endless sandy sack to fill it in. They then summon a giant sandstorm to scare off any remaining creatures, transforming the landscape into a desert as a warning for any who might think of excavating there.

Sack of Sand (earth, primal) A grit flinger’s bag is filled with infinite sand that they can use to beset their foes. The grit flinger can use their abilities with the earth trait only if they’re holding an intact sack of sand in one hand. The sack can be targeted by Strikes (AC 27). If the sack of sand takes at least 15 piercing or slashing damage from a single Strike, it starts to leak. At the start of each of the grit flinger’s turns, the leaking bag spills sand in a 5-foot emanation, creating difficult terrain that lasts for 1 day. The grit flinger can repair the sack with 1 minute of work. If the sack is separated from the grit flinger, it loses its magic and becomes a mundane sack of sand.

On a failure, the creature becomes covered in sand until it spends an action shaking off the debris. Anytime a creature covered in sand attempts an action with the concentrate trait, the action is disrupted unless the creature succeeds at a DC 5 flat check.Range [one-action] sand slash +17 (earth, primal, range 60 feet), Damage 2d8+6 slashing plus blinding sand

Sidebar - Treasure and Rewards Curmudgeonly Crafters

While grit flingers certainly don’t like others visiting them, occasionally one or two will set out on their own to trade their enclaves’ gemstones. They’re excellent gem carvers and encrust their claws with harder stones for cutting. Should one come to blows and best a grit flinger in combat, they’re likely to find many finely carved gemstones. However, grit flingers are just as eager to trade these gemstones peacefully for materials rare to the desert, such as wood, leaves, and aquatic curiosities.
