Puka

A puka's true form is unknown to all, save perhaps the Eldest. These private and tricksy shapeshifters almost always wear another shape, and they're invisible when not transformed. Pukas most commonly appear as fine black horses with golden eyes, often in full tack, approaching unsuspecting mortals and enticing them to take a ride. When a puka succeeds in coaxing a rider onto their back, they launch into a gallop far faster than any horse could sprint, taking their unfortunate rider on a wild and terrifying—but ultimately harmless—journey before dropping them off exactly where they were picked up. They play similar pranks in their other forms: leading hunters on a merry chase through darkened woods as a fox or wolf, tempting late-night tavern goers as a beautiful humanoid, or taunting mortal animals as an uncatchable hare.

Any animal form a puka takes is covered in slick black fur. Even in their humanoid guises, their hair remains similarly shiny and dark, and they always include some tell-tale animalistic features, such as a horse's ears or a fox's tail.

Change Shape [one-action] (polymorph, primal) The puka takes on the appearance of one of the following creatures: a Tiny fox, hare, house cat, or raven; a Small dog, goat, or humanoid (most often a gnome or goblin); a Medium wolf or humanoid (most often an elf or human); or a Large horse. The humanoid shapes always include minor animalistic features. The puka keeps their normal Strikes, though their hoof strike deals slashing damage instead of bludgeoning in shapes with claws.Wild Bolt [three-actions] (primal) The puka Strides five times. They can't use Wild Bolt again for 1d4 rounds.Wild Ride [one-action] (move, primal) Frequency once per day; Requirements The puka is invisible or in the shape of a horse, and is not in an encounter; Effect The puka bursts into a run. Their land Speed becomes 90 feet until an hour passes, they stop moving, they enter an encounter, or they take damage, whichever comes first. Moving at this Speed nonstop for the full hour, the puka can typically cover 20–30 miles. If the puka bears a rider, that rider can't move from their mounted position or be harmed in any way until the Wild Ride ends. An unwilling rider can attempt to get off as soon as the puka starts moving, but must succeed at a DC 18 Acrobatics check or Reflex save.

Sidebar - Additional Lore The Puka's Share

In rural areas with a strong connection to the First World, 1 Neth is known as the Puka’s Day, marking the end of the harvest. Tradition holds that any crops left in the fields after nightfall on 31 Lamashan must remain there as “the puka’s share,” with many farmers choosing to leave at least a few stalks of grain behind as a sign of respect for the visiting fey. This share, as well as any berries killed by an overnight frost, must not be consumed by mortals, as the puka will have spat on it to lay their claim, tainting it with their poisonous spite.
