Sorrow Stitcher

Sorrow stitchers, as their name suggests, are beings of intense sadness. Ages ago, their forebears transgressed against one of the great powers of the First World, and as a result, their entire people were exiled to the Universe, barred from returning in perpetuity. So severe is the denial of the joy and mirth of the First World that sorrow stitchers have lost the ability to experience any feeling beyond fear and sorrow.

Most sorrow stitchers spend their time seeking out things that might bring happiness, even though nothing can ever restore that emotion to them. They're especially drawn to areas of concentrated joy—parks, fairgrounds, parades and the like. Their proximity to mortal population centers can be troublesome, as their frustration over being unable to experience happiness often leads them to lash out at the very displays of joy that entice them.

Sorrow stitchers are pale, sallow folk. They shroud themselves in colorful patchwork cloaks, fruitlessly hoping the garish colors will bring them some measure of joy. Each sorrow stitcher also carries a magical needle that can briefly capture threads of fate. They use these needles to sew a mortal's happiness onto their own heart, hoping to steal it for themselves. Lacking the true power to weave fate, however, these threads quickly fray, leaving the sorrow stitcher more forlorn than ever.

The transgression that exiled the ancestors of the sorrow stitchers has been lost to time, but even now, each is born with a sense of loss, denial, and jealousy toward all who can know joy. Scholars have long pondered how gnomes, similarly cut off from the First World, have avoided the same fate; some claim the Bleaching is in fact a similar manifestation, causing endless ennui rather than sorrow. Others speculate that, as gnomes fled on their own terms instead of being exiled, their severance from the plane isn’t as severe.
