Vavaalrav (The Steeple’s Skull)Source Divine Mysteries pg. 316Mortals have always needed ways to remember and honor their ancestors, and it was from this fundamental need the
psychopomp usher Vavaalrav first imagined the spires and steeples of the
Boneyard. Vavaalrav is the guardian of sacred places, and the chill of his breath and stillness of his presence is felt across every mausoleum, tomb, and other burial ground of
the Universe. The Steeple’s Skull does not tolerate when the sanctity of a holy site or the rest of the dead is disturbed, and his symbol is used by mortals to ward graves against foul spirits and grave robbers alike.
The psychopomp’s cult attracts mortal architects, groundskeepers, mortuary workers, and masons, as well as many gargoyles. Even when they don’t worship the usher of graves,
gargoyles whose perches adorn cathedrals, temples, and tombs pay Vavaalrav the respect he is due as patron and protector of the hallowed grounds they call home.
Vavaalrav’s home, the Wailing Tor, is an impressive spire at the center of the Boneyard’s Eight Courts. Within its walls, all souls find the peace and rest of the afterlife, and the usher takes special care to welcome and watch over spirits who struggled to accept their fate and leave their mortal lives behind.
