Obari (The Wandering Storm)Source Divine Mysteries pg. 155From Obari’s earliest days as a member of a pantheon of ocean gods, he sought to travel beyond the bounds of the water, journeying to distant lands in search of something to give him a sense of purpose. His one constant during these travels was the goddess
Vudravati, whom he courted with elaborate stories of their potential future together, delighting her even as she also grew closer to his twin brother
Embaral. When she sought to take both as lovers, Obari and Embaral became consumed by jealousy and began warring with each other over Vudravati’s affections.
The fervor of the conflict between Obari and Embaral ultimately led to the loss of Golarion’s other gods of the ocean. Combat and voluntary self-exile eroded their numbers, ending only when Vudravati separated the brothers forever by laying between them in eternal slumber, creating the land of Vudra. Her children are said to be the Vudrani people.
At first, Obari raged at the loss of his love, spinning up typhoons and tsunamis to wake her and show his displeasure, but over time his anger cooled into a single-minded determination to help others who sought to find their heart’s desires far from familiar shores. Obari believes that once enough of his followers have spread throughout Golarion to achieve every possibility he and Vudravati once dreamed of, she will wake again with love for him and him alone.
Obari lends strength and determination to those who journey toward the unfamiliar, whatever the intent of that journey may be. He does not judge what his followers desire, caring instead about the size of the challenges that lay in front of them and the depth of their determination to succeed. Conquerors who seek to expand their territories and persecuted commoners who flee their homelands have both been known to seek Obari’s blessing on their travels. He also encourages his followers to follow other gods and has a congenial relationship with much of the Vudrani pantheon, whom he views as his descendants. Ragdya is a particular favorite, as his desire to learn matches Obari’s adventurous spirit.
Still, Obari is perhaps best known for his support of those whose journeys are as much of the heart as of the ocean. He takes special interest in long-distance romances and forbidden loves. He believes that those who begin difficult and even dangerous romances are walking the same path that he and Vudravati once trod, bringing Vudravati one step closer to reawakening. In turn, the failure of any great love forged over long distances or against steadfast opposition reminds him of his own loss, often causing typhoons and tidal storms to wrack the ocean that bears his name as he relives the painful experience.
Obari prefers to travel where the wind takes him, whether that be across the oceans within the Universe or to the distant reaches of the cosmos, and so he is often uncommunicative with his followers. However, he always eventually returns to his realm hidden deep within the Obari Ocean, where he might deign to answer a prayer or grant a miracle. When Obari travels on Golarion, he can sometimes be spotted in the middle of a crowd at a dock, watching over those beginning or ending a journey by sea. He is described as a Vudrani man with a barrel chest, broad shoulders, and an easy smile. His symbol, a broken anchor, is often the easiest way to identify him, as it is usually tattooed somewhere prominent on his body.
