PFS StandardVudravati (The Peaceful Mother)

Source Divine Mysteries pg. 161
According to the Mizravratta Brahmodya, in the days when Golarion had not yet finished forming, the god Vudravati wandered across the still-changing landscapes, breathing her joy and wonder into creation. Twin brothers, the gods Embaral and Obari, fell in love with her and both wished to please her. She loved them both and rejoiced in their company. But the brothers, unable to understand her boundless generosity, grew jealous, each wanting to control her love. They tried to force Vudravati into choosing between them, but she refused. Turning to violence, each brother then reasoned that, by destroying his twin, he would at last have all of Vudravati’s love for himself. An epic battle began that threatened to reshape the nascent world as the brothers toppled mountains, tore open vast canyons, and raised hurricanes, all in the hopes of destroying the other.

At first, Vudravati despaired, feeling despondent and powerless in the face of such willful and widespread destruction. Her love seemed pointless, and she could find no rest, so anguished was she by their aggression. Why had they not seen the generosity of her love? Did they really love her? Eventually, she decided to put this last question to the test. Vudravati called the brothers to her and convinced them to call a truce so that she could get some sleep. Each agreed only if she would lie down with him. So, she stretched out between the two, putting an end to their fighting.

As she went to sleep, Vudravati transformed into the land now known as Vudra. The two brothers, realizing their foolishness, became embodied in the Obari Ocean to the southwest and the Embaral Ocean to the east. From her body, says the scripture, emerged the people of Vudra, and she continues to support their every need through land and river. Many Vudrani believe they owe everything to her and ought to show her the utmost respect as she continues to sleep. In return, they say that she will continue to shower her people with her generous gifts and calm the twin oceans’ destructive rage. These worshippers see Vudravati as quite literally their land, raising simple shrines of natural materials and offering prayers to her spirit as it rests in the earth.
