Acquiring a shotalashu typically requires that the prospective rider bond with it first by spending a week of time with it and succeeding on a DC 21 Occultism check to establish a telepathic link. A rider who fails the check can attempt it again after another week with the shotalashu for each attempt. Any creature with telepathic capabilities, such as telepathy, touch telepathy, empathic sense, or the ability to cast spells such as telepathy, gains a +4 circumstance bonus to this check. The GM is the final arbiter of whether a given ability counts as telepathy for the purposes of forming a link. This link remains, and neither can form a new link until one member dies. The shock of a bonded partner dying leaves the survivor stupefied 2 for 24 hours and prevents them from forming a new link for at least a month.
